Ariel Sharon: Mama's boy?

Reading this OP-Ed piece on Ariel Sharon and how his relationship with his mother is the main reason behind his insistance on withdrawing from Gaza, I am wondering exactly if the purpose was to feed Anti-Sharon sentiment amongst arabs, or if the whole thing was a fluff piece to placate the israeli far-right. Either way, its sure to make his mom equally popular as he is on both sides. Moneyshot: Mr. Sharon's mom lived to a ripe old age, and she never stopped exerting an influence over her son. Last month in Paris, he offered a peek at their relationship to a French-Jewish audience. He recalled negotiating in Cairo back in the 1970's, as a senior member of Menachem Begin's government. By day he haggled with the Egyptians over the terms of peace. By night he called his mother. She'd give him a detailed report of her activities on the farm she still worked well into her 80's, then end with a maternal admonition about Arabs: "Never trust them." Pushing the seriously racist undertones of this column aside, it gives an interesting point of view on why exactly did Sharon withdraw from Gaza: To please the US adminstration!

Well, I don't know about all that, but I do know the newly vacated strip will make excellent killing grounds.

I just hope that they have been stocking up on jetfuel and bombs.

No SM I think you have it only partially right. Gaza withdrawal IMHO is not to please but to placate the US, but more importantly it is a great strategy. Sharon is not stupid you know , he has not survived all this time and done exactly what he wanted only to be deprived of his goal I really admire him and wish we had someone like him to get what needs to be done done !
Pulling out of Gaza is great for publicity, it shows the humane faces, it shows that Israel is all for peace and the costs are buffered by the annual aid it gets from thee US. Moreover, the Gaza settlers are getting a great compensation so they are not destitute. Almost 1/2 a million dollar for each family that's a cool sum . check here http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4151742.stm and here

and many of them could be re-settled in the West-Bank , which incidentaly is also internationaly recognized as occupied territory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Bank

So I say Sharon is on another winning streak , several birds with one stone. The whole world is going to sympathize now with the settlers who will also be a little bit manhandled. It is a masterstroke. However, though not duped I am grateful for this pullout , maybe , just maybe there will be a chance at piece, if Palestinians got toghether and acted with Sharon's intelligence.
