In Britian: The Prince of Wales will try to persuade George W Bush and Americans of the merits of Islam this week because he thinks the United States has been too intolerant of the religion since September 11. The Prince, who leaves on Tuesday for an eight-day tour of the US, has voiced private concerns over America's "confrontational" approach to Muslim countries and its failure to appreciate Islam's strengths. "His criticism of America was a general one of the Americans not having the appreciation we have for Islam and its culture," he said. Meanwhile in Australia: POLICE are being advised to treat Muslim domestic violence cases differently out of respect for Islamic traditions and habits.Officers are also being urged to work with Muslim leaders, who will try to keep the families together. [...] The instructions come in a religious diversity handbook given to Victorian police officers that also recommends special treatment for suspects of Aboriginal, Hindu and Buddhist background. Some police officers have claimed the directives hinder enforcing the law equally. Police are told: "In incidents such as domestic violence, police need to have an understanding of the traditions, ways of life and habits of Muslims." They are told it would be appreciated in cases of domestic violence if police consult the local Muslim religious leader who will work against "fragmenting the family unit". Islamic Women's Welfare Council head Joumanah El Matrah called the guidelines appalling and dangerous. "The implication is one needs to be more tolerant of violence against Muslim women but they should be entitled to the same protection," Ms El Matrah said. "Police should not be advising other officers to follow those sorts of protocols. "It can only lead to harm." Ms El Matrah said Muslim leaders should be brought into domestic violence investigations only if requested by the abused woman. No Comment.

If i called the police on my husband for domestic violence and they consulted a "religious" leader and didn't treat it like any other case, i'd sue their ass in a heartbeat. i'd also take it as cart blanche to defend myself as "i see fit" if the police weren't going to defend me as any other citizen.

The Prince, who leaves on Tuesday for an eight-day tour of the US, has voiced private concerns over America's "confrontational" approach to Muslim countries and its failure to appreciate Islam's strengths.
The prince is wrong on two counts.
1) Americans have been very tolerant of Islam since 9/11. We condemned any violence against Muslims right after 9/11 and continue to do so today. Anyone who was caught assauting Muslims were summarily arrested. Muslim leaders were invited on tv networks to speak about Islam and clarify any misunderstanding that some may have about the religion.
2) GWB has called Islam the religion of peace time and time again, and has even added the Quran to the presidential library.
What else do we have to do to appease Islam? Bend over and hand it some vaseline like the Brits are doing? Oh, hell, no... Muslims who love freedom and seek true peace are welcome in the US, but anyone who has an agenda to conquer the US through violence or political means can get the hell out and go back to the hell hole from which they escaped. And that goes to Muslims who rationalize, justify, and turn a deaf ear to the atrocities committed by terrorists in the name of Islam. They say you don't appreciate something until it's gone. Well, America is a damn fine country. Women and men are on equal footing in many areas of life. We're not perfect but we are trying very hard. We don't tolerate wife beaters, but some Muslims want to bring that crap over here and insist that we tolerate their culture? BS. They want to commit honor killings and expect us to turn a blind eye? Not gonna happen. Want us to ban piglet, piggy banks, and everything offensive to Muslims (which is a lot, btw)? Just try it and see the reaction from the people of this country.
And what is this "merits of Islam" that the prince is referring to? Would somebody educate me on this?
I can understand that Muslims can't openly speak out against some of these things so infidels like me will.

As a survivor of domestic violence I can't imagine the law ever overlooking it because of religion any religion. I can tell you that I can't believe for one second that any woman would want this to happen to her, she might not speak out for fear of worse but she'd never ask to be beaten. This is just plain wrong.
I agree with egyptiansally - it is a load of B.S. Canadian Muslim women are fighting to not have Sharia law instated here, and they would have otherwise stayed in their home countries if they had thought us dumbass Canadians would even consider Sharia law just for the Muslims. People move to all the free democracies in the world to escape their crazy ass laws in their home countries. We are such a bunch of roll over and play dead pussies.

You are correct. I read that article. I also read the follow up article that Canada denied a request for a special Sharia court and while they were at it, got rid of a Jewish religious court. It was the right decision. There is room for only one court for all people. Period. Australia and Britain are setting very dangerous precedents. I always preferred the younger prince, clearly a better choice. William may have the cuter face, but apparently falls short in the brains and testicular fortitude department. :)
In a free country, everyone is subject to the same laws regardless of faith, race, or gender. You can not give up those rights for someone else by claiming it is "sensitivity" to their culture.
If their culture is that important to them, it would behoove them to remain close to it and not migrate to a culture that is abhorrant to them.
If they wish to maintain the culture of their country of origin, it's best to just by them a one way ticket back home. That way everyone will be happy.
It is ibvious that in Victoria women who are not christian or jewish do not have the same right to legal protection as men.
I hope there will be some real fallout over this, heads banged, and careers destroyed. The people who are trying to put this in place deserve no less.

How embarrassing. After reading the British article, I realize the Prince of Wales they meant is Charles, not William. Hard for me to wrap my brain around an old man being called a prince.
