The culture War: Gay education Update

Remember the Mass. Father that got arrested for refusing to leave his 6 year old's son's school until the adminstration assured him that his son would be shielded from discussions about Gay households? You know, because he found out that the required reading for his 6 year old son included a Gay family? You do? Yeah, he is facing trial after spending a night in jail. And it gets better: The Lexington School Board contends Parker deliberately set out to be arrested and make national headlines. Parker's attorney, Jeffrey Denner, rejected that claim as supporters picketed outside the courthouse. The counter-argument for having the book and rejecting the Guy's demand? A backer of the Lexington School District, Laura Tully, argued, according to WCVB-TV in Boston, "A 5-year-old who is coming to the classroom with two moms deserves to be in a classroom that includes books that show his family." And like every good american real-life drama, there has to be a civil-lawsuit, you know, to give everybody on both sides of the fence something to get all riled up and angry about. Denner said he is negotiating with school officials to prevent the trial, but he also indicated that Parker likely will file a civil suit in federal court by this fall against the town of Lexington, the school system and its officials. The Culture War SUCKS!

You can teach tolerance in a kindergarten appropriate book without actually showing every single type of different family.

We've been doing it for decades with Dr. Seuss.

If this guy is willing to get arrested to draw attention to an issue he believes is important in raising his children--more power to him. Let's give him the headlines he wanted, I say.

I wonder why 5 and 6 yo's even need to know anything about sex other than the usual "if someone does something you don't like"....sort of stuff? What ever happened to childhood? Trying to make a kid feel normal who lives in a gay household is foolish. I know girls who grew up like this and nothing ever made them feel normal except for their father gaining custody and bringing them into his household with a step Mom and a Dad. Telling kids it is normal doesn't make it so! Public school sucks anymore. I wish they would just teach and leave the social to the parents as it should be.

I don't have kids but I'll tell you if I did I would not send them to public school! The state I live in now has an online school, for people who would rather home school.IMHO,this is a wonderful idea and then you know what your kid is being taught.

There is no such thing as a normal household. We all do the best we can, but some guy who makes a great political stink about public school course content in grade school is not doing it for the kid.

The children are learning the three R's at school. Culture learning comes from elsewhere. Don't worry, there'll be plenty of time and opportunity to learn the homophobia lessons at home.

jj mollo, you are so wrong. They spend so little time teaching anything but the "agenda" of the NEA there isn't time for the 3 R's anymore!

Just because someone doesn't want the gay/liberal agenda of the NEA shoved down their child's throat at a too young age doesn't men that children are being taught to be homophobic. What a shallow thinker you must be! I see you are part of the problem and not someone interested in a solution like this father is.Did you know that homeschooled children tend to fall into the top 5% of kids at graduation.Tell me again how public schools are still teaching the 3 R's? HMMMM?
