"Bashar, it's your Uncle on line 1..."

It seems that i am not the only one who thinks that Bashar's strategy of ruling Syria is probably dooming him and his country to a fate similar to Saddam Hussein's. Joining the ranks of Syrian Heretics who call on Bisho for reforms is none other then his own Uncle, Rifaat Al-Assad, the exiled brother of Bisho's Daddy. Oooh Mon Dieu. (What's french for Predicament? Preedicemonte? Anyone?) Rifaat al-Assad, the exiled uncle of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has called for elections in Syria and a change of its constitution, in a statement received Thursday by AFP. The statement, signed by Assad's United National Alliance, called for "a constitutional amendment in a way that fits with development" as well as "an end to emergency laws". It also stated that "free and honest general elections should be allowed" to take place in Syria along with a series of reforms, including the creation of political parties, freedom of expression and an end to corruption. "The world around us has changed on all levels while we are still here, repeating the same words," said the statement. Glad that someone in the Assad family noticed. Yo, Bisho! Do yourself a favor and listen to your Uncle. Come on boy, show some respect for your elders and stop being such a little Brat. No, you can't have Syria and Lebanon to be your personal toys and to do with them as you please anymore. Listen to your Uncle before your Uncle Sam puts you in permenant time-out. Now be a good boy and stop opressing your country. Yes, i know Daddy said you could do that but Daddy's was a major asshole. You don't wanna be rememberd like that, do you? You wanna be a good boy, right? Come on boy, make your Uncle proud!

Sandmonkey I hope you remmember that Rifaat Asad was not a brilliant member of that family - and that's why he is in exile and not rotting in some prison (only his name has saved him so far). So at the moment he is doing a stunt a la Jumblatt, and hoping to gain from Bashar's predicament (oh and it is spelled the same en Francais just pronounced differently ;) ).It's a good post but you used the wrong example, ask any Syrian how it was when Rifaat made Syria and Lebanon HIS playground and whose forces killed in Hama in the 80's.

Highlander...give the old uncle some credit; maybe he "grew-up" and got wiser? who knows?
Anything is better than the current regime of Syrian liars.
