Welcome to Zarqa

AP went to Zarqa, the Jordanian town of Abu Mossab al Zarqawi, and they found out that his town is torn, torn i said, over what their homeboy did in Jordan. Wanna see how torn they are? Check this out: "Any person who would do such an act must be considered a heretic," said Abu Ibrahim, a 56-year-old merchant standing outside his shop, several hundred yards from al-Zarqawi's high-walled house, where his relatives still live. Okay, that's a good start. Now let's see if things will stay this way and that people wouldn't reort to the kooky conspiracy theori...Ohh..too late. Others blamed Israel , which despite its 1994 peace treaty with Jordan is still seen as a pariah by many here, who trace their roots back to the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. "I don't even know if the man is still alive or not," Abed el-Momany said of al-Zarqawi. "I would not discount the Israeli Mossad. Israel is the worm in the Arab world," he added. Wow, that train is never late, is it? LOL And here are some more people who are torn: Ayman Tawalby, sitting cross legged on the ground and stroking his Osama bin Laden-style beard, said he opposed any terrorist attacks inside Jordan. "I support the resistance against the Americans in Iraq and against the Israelis everywhere," said the unemployed 47-year-old. "Those are our enemies. But I don't support bombing innocent civilians." And by innocent civillians he means jordanian innocent civilians. The Israeli civilians? Oh, kill them everywhere. Bomb the living shit out of them. They are not inncoent, they are jews, you see, and they eat muslims babies for breakfast. So , you see, wanting their civilians dead while wanting ours alive is not hypocritical to say the least. We are talking apples and oranges here. And here is another man with a brave dissenting voice against Zarqawis latest indiscriminate killing: In the town's center, Nabil Daoud said he supported bin Laden when he fought the Soviets and, later, the Americans in Afghanistan , just like he backed al-Zarqawi's insurgency against the U.S.-led occupation in Iraq. "But when they started targeting Muslims, I stopped sympathizing with them," said Daoud, who is in his early 20s. "I don't understand it anymore." Kill anybody but muslim, and I understand it. It's ok. Just not the muslims. Draw the red line when it comes to muslims. Anybody but the muslims is fair game to kill torture or bomb. You kill those, you get my sympathy, but you kill muslims? You lose it you psycho killer you. sigh.. No wonder. Seriously, no wonder he is this crazy. If I grew up in such a town I would be this nutty as well. The people of the town are torn because Jordanian muslims died? What about the Iraqi muslims? What about the non-muslim civillians who died in the blasts? They don't count? What kind of psycho logic is that? WHAT'S WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?

"WHAT'S WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?"___Much the same as was wrong with many Germans in the 1930s. An extreme case of "Us-and-Them" disease. It goes with tribalism and a desire for Strong Leadership.

I don't see what ur problem is it's perfectly logical. why would you expect people to support the killing of their own? of course they support the killing of the enemy - and they do see americans and israelis as the enemy, a position that is not unsupported by international law. If everyone kills civilians during war, and they do, why should arabs have more of a conscience? whereas, of course they're against killing muslims civilians, not because they are civilians, but because obviously it's counterproductive. grow up...why expect from arabs what no one else has ever displayed.

forsooth;
" If everyone kills civilians during war, and they do, why should arabs have more of a conscience?"

The difference would be that the U.S. forces don't actively and intentionally target civilians in combat. Yes, civilians do unfortunately get injured or killed in wartime, but bin Laden, al Zarqawi, et al are *actively* targetting civilians. They fully intend for civilians to get killed and in fact count on it (how is the Radisson hotel considered a valid miltiary target?)
I can hear some people saying "Oh but the U.S. actively targets civilians! You're lying!" to which I answer this: If you think the U.S. is really intentionally targetting civilans then you must really think that we aren't very good as a military. If we were really trying to kill civilians and raze towns, don't you think we'd be quite a bit more effective?

In regards to al Qaeda killing civilians, isn't it forbidden to intentionally kill non-combatants anyway? Although I thought it was also forbidden to make images of humans and animals but bin Laden appears on video so much that perhaps I misunderstood.

You think it is the environmnet in Zarkawi's village that thinks this way? Think again, this is what is being said all over the Arab world, all over the Muslim world and even most practicing Muslims in Europe and America say the same thing. Arab professors in the US try to hide their hate and anti-Semitism, but the bias and hate they grew up with come out even in their lectures. Arab culture is barbaric and needs to show compassion towards the rest of humanity. Why hate America and Isael? Hate is toxic to Arab health.

Forsooth,

maybe it's because their point of argument is that the israelis and the americans are monsters because they target civilians, which is what Al Qaeda is doing; Maybe it's because as far as Jordan is concerned, the US and Israel have been nothing but super friendly. Hell, the country that enjoys the best relationship (economic or otherwise) with Israel in the middle-east is Jordan. Or maybe because the same people who find it so horrible for civillians to die have no problem when otehr civillians die. Say what you wnat about the US, but when they start wars, half of them take to the street protesting the bombing of civillians. The same doesn't happen in the arab world or Jordan for that matter. We have no problems if civillians die on the hands of our countrymen, as long as theya re not our own and on our land.

Or maybe I just like to hold us to a higher standard. Is that so bad?

He doesn't understand it any more, because he never did understand it, of course.

He was probably fed propaganda that told him that Al-Qaeda are fighting evil Jews and Americans. He was told that they are defending Iraqis by fighting the Americans. How they managed to explain to him that fighting the majority of Iraqis constitutes defending them, I'll never know.

I hope he starts questioning what he now knows he doesn't understand.

But I'm not too optimistic.

It is what they are taught from infants; it is a "we are better than them attitude," except it goes much further - the "them" are worthy of death, not just ostracism. It sures looks like "them" or "us" to me, especially when the only alternative to death is still death.

2/3's of Jordanians supported Al Queda while it murdered thousands of innocent Iraqi's. THOSE Muslims don't count, apparently because they have Americans in their country. Dan Quayle said it best...Terrible minds are a good thing to waste.

If the U.S. decided to target civilians there would not be any civilians when we were finished.

" The US army killed 30,000 innocent civilians in Iraq,"

Since the total number of deaths is 27000, I guess this means the terrorists have brought 3000 people to life.

"they did that because they were non-americans."

What good would that do the Americans?

"Same attitude everyhwere"

Then go ahead and change yours. Mine is different.
