The Nation of Islam vs. Muslims over alcohol

This is very interesting: The just wanted to leave a message: Stop selling alcohol to fellow Muslims. In urban America, friction between poor residents and immigrant store owners is nothing new. Nor are complaints that inner-city neighborhoods are glutted with markets that sell alcohol and contribute to violent crime, vagrancy and other social ills. But the recent attack at San Pablo Liquor — and an identical vandalism spree at another West Oakland store later that evening, along with an arson fire there and the kidnapping of the owner a few days later — have injected religion into the debate. The two episodes highlighted tensions — and different interpretations of the Quran — between black Muslims in this struggling, crime-ridden city of 400,000 and Middle Eastern shop owners, many of them also Muslims. [...] "I think it's pretty clear that the number of these stores in low-income communities is not good for people," she said. San Pablo market owner Abdul Saleh, who has kept his store open following the attacks, said his decision to sell alcohol is "between me and God." "We're just coming here to make a living like anyone else," he said. While black and Middle Eastern Muslims may pray at the same mosques on weekends, their worlds do not tend to overlap beyond that, said Hatem Bazian, professor of Near East and ethnic studies at the University of California at Berkeley. The Middle Eastern store owners tend to live in the suburbs, the black Muslims in the cities, Bazian said. The immigrant shopkeepers also interpret Islam to allow the sale of alcohol. I am not sure those are the only differences though. Black muslims usually follow the Nation of Islam's version of Islam, which, let's face it, had nothing to do with actual Islam, no thanks to their founder Elijah Mohamed. For them Elijah Mohamed is god's messenger, and the white man and the jews are to blame for everything. To say that the organization and its followers are a lil unhinged would be an understatement. Even Malcom X figured it out in his last days and wanted to get his people to understand this, only to be killed by Louis Farakhan's goons. Anyway, how weird is it that the muslims and the nation of Islam don't clash over the gross mischaracterization and alteration of Islam that the Nation indulges in, and end up clashing over the sale of alcohol with regular muslims being in support of it? What a strange millenium!

Couple of errors in this article you refer too.

1. These vandals are not affiliated with the NOI. This is backed up by the NOI who issued a statement when this happened in November they did not know these men. The vandals belong to a group called the Our MUlsim Bakery that dresses similar to NOI but is not the NOI.

2. The articles published when this occurred (late Nov) indicate the vandals asked the clerks if they were muslims and enjoined them to stop poisoning thier nieghboorhood NOT other muslims. This latter statement makes no sense since muslims are not supposed to drink. More importantly most african americans are still Christian, so not selling to liqour to muslims really would not help the with the problem of alchohol abuse in black communities.

The true issue here is the perception that new immigrants obtain the american dream by exploiting the african american community. The race or religion of the exploiter changes over time, in the 80's and 90's it was the Koreans, now its Muslims and Chaldeans. In 10 years it will be someone else. That is the issue. I dont believe thier actions were at all correct but too many of our communites are vaste wastelands were u cant even find a grocery store but there is a liqour store on every corner. Would you want to live in that atmosphere? I think not.

To Aliandira: did you read on damn thing I wrote or even Sandmonkey's post? Your response really has nothing to do with any of the previous comments, you just seem to want to be a racist.

I was pointing out the errors, THE VANDALS WERE NOT NATION OF ISLA as Sandmonkey and his source article stated.

The article Sandmonkey was referenced also infers there is some huge tension between "normal" muslims and Black muslims in the USA. Well I offered the opinion of an REAL LIVE AFRICAN AMERICAN and my point of view is the tension between the African American communities and immigrant carpetbaggers has nothing to do with race or religion. First it was the Irish, the Jews replaced the Irish. The Koreans replaced the Irish who in turn were replaced by the Indians and most recently the Muslims and Chaldeans.

See I dont know if you have ever been to the usa or not but I can tell you one thing every single immigrant group has shared through history. The right to look down on African Americans when they dont know a goddamned thing about our history. You seem to be falling right in line.
