Mubarak won't meet with Hamas officials
Why doesn't that- and the fact that it isn't published in an egyptian newspaper- surprise me?

Not surprising at all & i dnt belive it has anything to do with the negative image it might send to the International Media.
Egypt tried a few times to calm down Hamas & unite the palestinian militants effort behind the PA & failed, due to Hamas intransigence.
Now they obviously came asking for money so why meet them? The rebuffed him so he rebuffs them now, sounds good to me, right?
Hosni Mubarak's unwillingess to meet with Hamas is certainly not a surprise.
There are both domestic and foreign policy reasons of why Mubarak refused to meet with them.
The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt recently provided aid funds to Hamas and the Brotherhood is a staunch opponent of Mubarak's National Democratic Party - the politics are simple. Mubarak will not support an Islamist organization or any of its factions.
Hamas' intransigence has also led Mubarak to believe that it is absolutely futile to meet with them.
Moreover, Mubarak is a close ally of the United States and the current administration considers Hamas a terrorist organization - agains simple politics.
Hamas wants to meet Mubarak to leverage funds. However, their uncompromising methods in the past have led Mubarak to refuse funding.
Unless Hamas starts to change the image they are portraying around the world, Mubarak will be willing to support them.
However, thinking that the funds will go in the militant faction's hands is a scary thought.
