Yahoo may be retarded!
In the great british tradition of banning icecream covers and Piglet drawings that offend muslim sensibilities, Yahoo mail in the UK may be banning any handle that has the word allah in it. Yahoo! is banning the use of allah in email names - even if the letters are included within another name.
This was uncovered by Reg reader Ed Callahan whose mother Linda Callahan was trying to sign up for a Verizon email address. She could not get it to accept her surname.
Enquiries to Verizon revealed that a partnership with Yahoo! was to blame. Yahoo! will not accept any identies which include the letters "allah".
Nor will Yahoo! accept yahoo, osama or binladen. But it will accept god, messiah, jesus, jehova, buddah, satan and both priest and pedophile.
So Jesus and pedophile are cool, Allah and Binladen are not? A spokesman for Yahoo! UK said: "This sounds like a glitch. But we will get back to Ed and Lindy Callahan with a full answer as soon as possible." Let's hope it's a glitch. Otherwise this could be the final proof that british now means retarded! PS: Thanks to Suzanne, this story may be true. Here is a list of the banned words: | |

What about people named Abdallah?
rofl
I was wondering about Mohammad as in idontbelieveinmohammad....
lol
I find it a bit hard to believe! why would they do that? what about Alah with one L instead of double L?
This just reaffirms my belief that islam and democracy are not compatible. Mock and ridicule Jesus all you want, but mock allah or mo, and all hell breaks loose.
And when muslims say they believe in Jesus, too, don't believe it. What they're not telling us is that the Jesus they believe is not the same Jesus as depicted in the Bible.
/wonder if I can issue a fatwa against the tag team of allah and mo.....hmmm...

Why expect Yahoo to defend freedom of speech when they helped the Chinese government to jail two journalists (that are known about, to date)?
such crap :) we spell the names differently, both allah and mohammed :)) so anyone out of Commonwealth can do it :P
When signing up for yahoo for a yahoo ID you can fill in three suggestion words for your new ID.
I tried: Mecca + Quran + Prophet
I got several ideas for a yahoo ID with all the words included.
I chose: Allah + Mohammed + Prophet
I got "not available" (heh, perhaps that's why I am not a muslim ;) )
I chose: Mohammed + Sandmonkey + Islam
I got several ideas for a yahoo ID (including a version with Ahmed, lol ) with all the words
I chose: Denmark + Flag + Cross
Nos problemos, several options with all the words
I chose: Hitler + Germany + Jews
No problem. Several options with all the words.
but watch this...
I chose Arafat + Osama + Hamas, and option I got were only:
These Yahoo! IDs are available:
hamasarafat
hamas_arafat
@Jeff,
Yahoo + Dhimmi:
barbariandhimmi
barbarian_dhimmi
boordhimmi
boor_dhimmi
chuffdhimmi
lol
@jokerman,
Alah (allah with one l) gives results.
@andrew brehm,
Abdallah is not working. I get no alternatives. Abdullah though works. Although Abdullah + Mahmoud gives results without Abdullah in the name (guess too many chose that one already) Abdullah + rose, gives several options with the full name Abdullah.
@myrtle,
Congratulations, the ID
idontbelieveinmohammed
is available!
hehehehehehe great posting
My freind has an email address of nukes4sale
From the list of blocked names, it seems they're trying to ban names that might be common amongst spammers, email fraud, and chain email senders (especially the names like "yahoo", "admin", etc), rather than words it consideres offensive (with the excpetion of raghead).
Perhaps yahoo are super concerned that people will recive email instructions from "allah" and carry them out???
You know how you always live in fear of that angry email form allah in your inbox ;)
Honestly, to have a clearer idea of what they are doing, you'd need to be able to see the kinds of user names being reported as spam. "Allah" on it's own is probably not the problem, but spammers might be using something like "kill4allah", etc. We can't know just from seeing the list what the situation is, but we can see that the names are email secuirty related more than politically sensitive related, as all the further examples provided in the comments show.
In terms of email abuse, it only takes one person to send out a couple thousand emails initialy to make a difference and clog all our inboxes with some annoying crap, becuase no matter how many times you tell people about what you think are OBVIOUS email scams, MADE UP stories used to collect email, or just unbeliveable crap, someone you know and love will foreward one to you anyway, along with 300 other names (possibly saying something REALLY unbelievable like "if this email gets 1 million names on it ..[something people want to happen politically will happen]".
Once you recive one email like that from someone you know, you can bet that the list of names (including yours) will be on the desk of some bigtime spammer who will be sending you something about bored houeswives, illegal drugs, and a donkey farm real soon. (puke!)
danto fadyeen beshakl!
