Nadz on Gaza

Nadz has the right attitude regarding the Gaza evacuation: The fact that this was long overdue doesn't mean that we Palestinians are off the hook. Now is not the time to cheer or gloat, but to take responsibility for the Gaza Strip and to quell Hamas, who would love to milk this pullout for all its worth. They can't claim the credit for this, it will only confirm the fears of those who consider this move to be appeasement. Now more than ever, we need to crack down on Hamas and keep them from using the new freedom of Gazans to kill more Israelis. They won't change their stripes. Furthermore, this is a chance to show the Israelis and the world that we can run a functional, independant territory on our own without allowing terrorists to dominate. We can, if we can crack down on corruption and refuse to let corrupt PA officials take all of the economic benefits from the withdrawal. Life will get easier for Gazans as the checkpoints and roadblocks go away, but there is also the potential to revitalize the joke that is the Gazan economy. Read the whole thing!

I'll repeat what I posted on Nadz' site:
Great post, Nadz....and from a strong supporter of Israel, I agree with you 100% regarding the Palestinians now having the opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade. If they let Hamas and terrorist groups take over Gaza, they will not only lose the trust and respect of the world, but they will have lost another opportunity for them to build an independent, successful country. I would love to see a prosperous democratic Palestine living in peace and in economic cooperation with Israel.

Abba Eban used to say that the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Let us hope that isn't true this time.
