Sharon quits Likud, will start a new party
Sharon decided yesterday that he had enough of the Likud crazies and quit the party he helped found, to start a new one called "National Responsbility". He also called for the dissoloution of parliament and new elections to be held next march, which he is slated to win comfortably as well. The reason for the split? The Likud hardliners would've opposed future peace plans with the palestinians. Yes, Sharon quit his party because he wants peace with the palestinians. That notion alone should give the "Sharon-likes-to-eat-palestinain-babies-for-breakfast" crowd a serious migraine. This will be very interesting, because the next election will be divided between Netenyaho, Sharon and Paretz. Right, center and left have never been so clearly defined in an election before. This should be good.

You are right, Sandmonkey. It should be good, if only for the simple fact that something at long last happens in Israeli politics.
I think I'll vote for Sharon party (unless they screw up big on something until March). But don't imagine it is easy for a new party to actually win an election in Israel. It never happened before, even when Ben Gurion himslef made a similar move and split from his Labour party (Then called Mapai). But we shall wait and see.
I predict Sharon will win big. Peres will join him. They will represent the broad consensus of Israeli opinion.
