Italy, you got some 'splainin to do!

You've got to be kidding me: A panel of Italian judges upheld the November acquittals of three North Africans on international terror charges, ruling that recruiting suicide bombers to fight against U.S. soldiers is not terrorism, a lawyer said Thursday.

The verdict by the Milan judges, released Wednesday, echoes an earlier one in the case when a lower court judge ruled the actions of the three men were those of guerrillas, not terrorists.

Government officials condemned the latest ruling. Justice Minister Roberto Castell apologized to the victims of suicide attacks and their relatives, saying “there is in me a great feeling of shame, bitterness and powerlessness.”

“At this point, I feel I have the duty to apologize to the hundreds of children, women and men who were massacred by suicide bombers, and to their relatives,” he said in a statement carried by Italian news agencies. Oh man. Stefania is furious over the ruling: Today, I'm ashamed to be an Italian!

Time for an appeal showing the judge some nasty pictures of civillians being killed on purpose through this method, I believe.

you would think watching TV they would get it, u know?

Remember that bus of 32 iraqi children, which was blown up in order to kill one US soldier? Do you think that Judge ever heard of that one?

Are you familiar with Italian tv? :) Men in suits and women - their hair dyed blonde - in bathing suits chatting about anything but politics. They have more important things to watch than the news ;)

Anyhow, I do not expect much from a country who had the largest weapon deliveries to Syria before the war on Iraq started and whose president calls himself Jesus and Napoleon.
:)

This is a national shame. The Italian judicial system is in the hands of the extreme left, who fully support the Iraqi rebels. After this sentence none will can stop the recruiting of suicide bombings for Iraq and the fund raising that the extreme leftist do for the so-called Iraqi resistance. And the leftist coalition seems to be the favourite for the next elections in April. This situation make me sick.:(

To Suzanne: yes, it's true that the Italian tv is of very low quality (but I don't condemn women in bathing suits for this), but Berlusconi never call himself Jesus and Napoleon. :)

@an Italian,
First of all I believe the extreme left winged are gaining more popularity because of the failing right winged. And - correct me if I am wrong - it looks like it that there is not much to chose if you want something in the middle. Just like around WWII when you were either a fascist or a communist :)

Secondly, ok. He did not say it that explicitely, but he is said to have said that he was like Jesus and that he had compared himself to Napoleon. ;)

I don't get it, do you guys have evidence that these three where recruiting people with the intentio of them commiting terrorist attacks against civilians?

what are you complaining about, I don't know anything about the case so maybe I'm missing something.

you do realize that suicide bombing can (was and is) be used as a technique against military targets not just civilians don't you?

we are complaining about the fact that those 3 guys were recruitng people with the intention of getting them to kill other people and were let off. And while suicidebombing can be used against military targets, most of the time it tends to not discriminate against its victims and kills military people and civillians alike. Sometimes the suicidebomber will be ok with killing the civillians as long as he/she gets to kill the military guy: like the children bus in Iraq, with 32 of them dead so they can kill one american guy.

The point is, suicidebombers don't value life ya alaa. If you were their biggest supporter of their cause, and were there by mistake, i don't think they will hesitate to push that button and kill u too, and I don't think their bomb will chose not to kill you either.

Ya basha, this is what chnaged me. The Taba bombing. the moment you see it with your own eyes, the death and the mayhem, and see how close you were to it, your persepctive changes. I mean, suddenly all the excuses and history you know doesn;t matter anymore, and you get a new focus. You realize that those people want you dead. Not u necessrily, but chnaces are, they wouldn't feel bad about it if you died amongst the victims. And I know that you wnat to live ya Alaa. I want to live too. I don't want to die. And if it's between me- or you even- and 100 of those jihady fuckheads who want to die, it's no contest man, they got to go.

And now, 3 guys who recruited for them, are let go because the italian law is riddeled with holes. That's why we are so upset ya Basha.

but you can't be prosecuted for recruiting people who may not discriminate, a crime has to be something done with criminal intent, if you can prove that the recruiters wanted civilians to die you have a case, if you can only prove that they probably didn't give a hoot you don't really have a case.

or maybe you do have a case but you need to find a different crime, I wouldn't call it terrorism, and obviously the judge too.

maybe reckless guerrillas or something.

I don't know much about italian law, but I suspect it's your grasp of law that is full of holes, this actually has nothing to do with my opinion of suicide bombers. it has much to do with my opinion of how courts should act. statistical probability of civilian victims doesn't sound like good evidence in court, it's not for instance a good excuse to put landmine engineers in jail unless the technique of land mines is explicitly and universaly recognised as an unlawful act of war (which it is nowadays thanksfully).

if some real studies on suicide bombing as a strategic technique and not as a pseudo-cultural phenomena are conducted and a reasonable argument is presented that they are too dangerous even by war zone standards, I'll say explicitly criminalize it, and once you do that you can put recruiters in jail if you want, but before you do that you can't do anything about it.

This is a sad statement Alaa but you comments are one of the reasons that there are a growing number of people (in the west)who believe that you should have a happy thermo-nuclear Christmas. before shock and awe there was a feeling that some countries should be bombed back to the stone age but there aren't any bombs that will accelerate you INTO the stone age. vaya con dios.
